Back in 1830, the Shawnee Methodist Mission was sent by the Methodist Church to service the Shawnee tribe in nearby Wyandotte County. By 1839, the Mission was moved to Johnson County, which was named after the Reverend Johnson who headed the Mission. Today, the name Shawnee Mission refers to an area comprised of sixteen separate small towns in Johnson County, KS. Today, the communities within the area boasts its love for its resident pups through its twenty veterinarians and clinics that are ready to respond to your pup's needs.

    Werner Park, a 2-acre park in Shawnee, is named for former City Council member Roger Werner whose family donated the park land. The Park is home to the Storm Chasers Baseball team and also has walking paths around the ball park for some paw-some exercise before the game. Werner Park is an access point to the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail, approximately four miles of paved, multi-use trail that passes through wooded areas, a butterfly garden, and several parks. Nearby, Merriam Marketplace is an outdoor events location with a beautiful green space and park benches to enjoy when activities are not set up. On quiet days, this is a great spot for a leashed walk through this area.
