I’m Courtney. I’m finishing up at NC State this summer and studied human biology. I’ve always loved dogs and even volunteered at a shelter called Juliet’s House in Greensboro, NC. They’re a non-kill shelter who provide homes, food, and medical care to any animals that need rescuing. My family has a yellow lab, Bailey, who is now 11 years old. I’ve also pet sat many times before.

With a name like Sunset Beach, this North Carolina town is sure to be beautiful, and it does not disappoint! Sunset Beach is located in southwestern Brunswick County, and it's home to almost 4,000 people. While many people vacation in Sunset Beach rather than live there year-round, there are plenty of neighborhoods in town that are ideal for any lifestyle. Three of the main neighborhoods in Sunset Beach are built around golf courses, so if you're a fan of hitting the links, you're in luck. You can also explore the town with your dog and enjoy the sunshine and seaside living together.
The town's namesake beach is dog-friendly, but your dog must be on a leash during your visit. The sand is soft and pawfect for walking on, and visitors note that there aren't too many little shells in the sand that could hurt delicate dog paws. Sunset Beach is a three-mile-long barrier island, and it's joined by Bird Island, which is about a mile and a half. Be advised that from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are not allowed on the beach between 8 AM an 6 PM. If you're looking for off-leash dog activities near Sunset Beach, there are lots of those, too!
McLean Park is a 10-acre park with a two-acre lake in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and it is only 15 miles from Sunset Beach. This park doesn't have a designated off-leash area, but there's no doubt this is a very dog-friendly place! The park has doggy bag stations throughout to make sure it remains as clean as it always is. Other activities in the park include playgrounds, sports fields, tennis courts, picnic shelters, and a meditation garden. There's a walking path around the perimeter of the park, and you and Skip will love exploring it together while you take in the park!
The town of Little River, South Carolina is less than 15 miles from Sunset Beach, and on the western edge of town, you'll find Waggin' Tails Dog Park. This dog park is open from 6:30 AM to 7 PM every day, and it includes an area for dogs under 25 pounds, as well as an area for bigger dogs. This park is located behind a sports complex, so there's paw-lenty of convenient parking when you visit! There are water fountains and waste bags stations in the park, and you'll also find shaded spots for hot days and benches throughout the park.
Holden Beach is a town of just over 600 people in North Carolina, and it's about 20 miles east of Sunset Beach. Northern Holden Beach is home to the town's own dog park, and there are lots of paw-pportunities to have fun here! The Holden Beach Dog Park isn't a very big park, but there's enough space for both you and your dog to enjoy yourselves. This peaceful park is located on a quiet street, and since it opened in 2014, it's become a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Within the park, you'll be pleased to find drinking water for dogs, seating, and waste disposal items.
The town of Shallotte, North Carolina is only 10 miles from Sunset Beach, and in the town's western quadrant, you'll find a dog park! The Shallotte Dog Park is located within Shallotte Park, and it is open every day from 8 AM to 10 PM. In addition to the dog park, Shallotte Park has sports fields, basketball and tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and concession stands. The Bark Park includes big and small dog sections, and visitors note the fence around the small dog park goes all the way to the ground, which is good news if your little pup is an escape artist! There are water stations and waste disposal supplies on both sides of the park, too!
Myrtle Beach is less than 30 miles south of Sunset Beach, and in the center of town, there's a place called Barc Parc North. It takes about half an hour to drive there from Sunset Beach, and this dog park includes big and small dog sections. This 3.3-acre dog park also has seating, plenty of trees for shade, and water stations for dogs. Barc Parc North's companion dog park, Barc Parc South, is a 14-acre park with big and small dog sections, but it's a further drive from Sunset Beach. Both dog parks are free to use, and you and your dog are sure to enjoy yourselves!
