Caroga Lake
Caroga Lake is located along the southernmost boundary of the Adirondack State Park and offers easy access to its wonders. The Park features almost 6 million acres of forest, wetlands, and bodies of water, including lakes, streams, ponds, and rivers. It contains the highest mountains in New York, and countless trails, rock-climbing, and ice-climbing sites. The park offers five hiking trails in its vicinity that range from a little over one mile to six miles, of varying terrain. A flatwater canoe/kayak trail runs through nearby Canada and West Lakes. Other trails in Caroga include the Stewart and Indian Lakes Trail, and the Kane Mountain Trail, both short and easy hikes for you and your furry bestie! Caroga Lake is just the tip of the iceberg that is the Adirondack State Park, and it’s a great place to start!

Hale Mills/ Kecks Center
This neighborhood in Gloversville is where you can access one of the trail ends of the dog-friendly Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville Rail Trail, the other trail end being in Johnstown 8 miles to the south. The trail is paved in asphalt, is wheelchair accessible and supports hiking, bicycling, skating, and in winter cross-country skiing. Although the trail passes through downtown Gloversville and Johnstown, it maintains a pastoral feel and features scenic views and frequent sightings of wildlife, especially the segment that follows along Anthony Creek at the northern end. Parking is available at both endpoints, plus two other places where the trail passes through downtown Gloversville at Fulton Street and at Main Street. With plenty of places along the way to stop for a bite or some water, this is a furtastic trail to explore with Fido!

S Main St/ Harrison St
This Gloversville neighborhood is home to Meyers Park, a quiet 50 acres filled with lawns, shrubs and flower gardens featuring paved walks dotted with benches for a contemplative sit or a rest before wandering on. Your fur-pup is welcome here on a leash, and there are picnic tables with grills for enjoying that al fresco lunch or dinner with your furry and human family members. Of special interest to the doggo might be the goldfish pond where the lazy swimming of the fish will entrance both of you. A water fountain provides a refreshing stop, and there are restrooms for the humans. There’s even a fabled witches’ cave, off-limits to the public, but memorialized by the “Witch Xing” sign near the site. Gazebos and shade trees offer respite from the sun, and the many birdhouses and feeders will entertain you with their avian visitors. Furtastic!

Saint Johnsville
Lassellsville State Forest is located in Saint Johnsville, just a few miles from Caroga Lake. This year-round wilderness park of almost 2,500 acres features almost 7 miles of hiking and multi-use trails, as well as primitive camping off the trails and roads. Leashed dogs are welcome, and their humans are responsible for removing their waste. There is no water available, so be sure to bring plenty, and if you come to the park during hunting season, bring blaze orange garments for both of you. The Forest is a mix of low hills and sandy plains, with some nearby wetlands, all of which are home to abundant wildlife, including the shy black bear, waterfowl and songbirds, raptors, and various mammals large and small. What a feast for the canine senses!

Mayfield
Mayfield is a town to the east of Caroga Lake that is home to Great Sacandaga Lake, a popular spot for outdoors-loving folks and their doggos! Mayfield is on the southwest side of the lake, and the town features the Sunset Bay Vacation Resort and Marina, a leashed dog-friendly camping and recreation park. With 270 RV sites, many of them close to the lake and most with panoramic views of the forest and mountains, this family-friendly resort has something for everyone, including Fido! Its hiking trails and outdoor dining possibilities, as well as 2,000 feet of shoreline (note that some lakeside areas restrict dogs), you and your pup can walk to your heart’s content, or launch a boat from the marina and take a ride on the lake. Sit with the pooch by your side and watch the furtastic sunset over the lake. This is a pawsome destination for vacationing families and their pups!
