Summertime means baseball and softball in Dumont. This town has devoted much of its green spaces to sports fields. Leashed dogs are among the fans that show up to cheer on those teams. Dumont also has twelve municipal parks scattered in every area of the small town. These parks generally consist of a little grass, a set of playground equipment for the kids, and maybe another ball field. A couple parks have tennis courts and basketball hoops. These parks are very small, though. They do lack the major amenities of larger parks, like picnic sites and walking trails. Dogs may find some green grass to sniff and may be walked on-leash through an unused ball field, but dedicated trails aren’t part of the landscape.

Just outside the eastern boundary of Dumont is the Palisades Interstate Park. This park encompasses 2,500 acres and is situated along the bluffs of the Hudson River. Palisades is a National Historic Landmark. There are many recreational opportunities in this park, including boating, fishing, picnicking and hiking. Dogs are not allowed in the Fort Lee Historic Park and Allison Park or in the picnic areas. Dogs are, however, permitted on leash on the many trails. The two main trails are the Long Path and Shore Trail.  These trails are easy to moderate in difficulty. Five trails connect to the these two main trails, and a couple of these are challenging. In addition, six ski trails are available to hikers during the off-season.

People who need more than a whiff of the outdoors have only a short drive from Dumont to some serious hiking adventures!
