Downtown

Harvey is a whistle-stop in the shadow of cosmopolitan New Orleans. For a small town, though, Harvey does have a good number of dog-friendly hotels and restaurants. Travelodge New Orleans Westbank, located at 2200 Westbank Expressway, allows dogs in any of its rooms. Up to two dogs of any size may stay for an additional fee of $15 per dog per night. Motel 6, located at 3750 West Bank Expressway, doesn’t charge for one dog up to fifty pounds. Parrot’s Pete serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in dog-friendly outdoor seating. This restaurant is located at 1901 Manhattan Blvd. Sonic Drive-In, located at 955 Manhattan Boulevard, is good for a quick hot dog or burger with your furry friend. Sonic Drive-In has a variety of shakes and ice cream desserts which make for a cool end to a hot Louisiana day.

Metairie

Metairie is located 12 miles west of Harvey. It is a town with shops, and a variety of things to see and do. Metairie is home to two dog parks. Lafreniere Dog Park is located at 3000 Downs Blvd. This 5-acre dog park is fully fenced with areas for small and large dogs. The grassy park has one water fountain, a generous supply of waste bags, and a few benches for a human companion. The dog park is open Tuesday through Sunday from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m, and on Monday from 1 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Bonnabel Boat Launch Bark Park is located at 1599 Bonnabel Blvd. This small dog park is big enough for even the largest dog to get some play and exercise. The surrounding park has paths for on-leash walking, and you and your pup can fish together off the pier.

Covington

Covington is 40 miles north of Harvey. This sleepy little Louisiana town has quaint shops and is home to Pretty Acres Dog Park. Pretty Acres is located at 301 S. Orchard Lane. This Dog Park is a flat and grassy fenced field for dogs to run, run, and run. This Dog Park has a picnic table in the middle of the dog park, but there is no shade to be found. Dogs don’t mind, though. A few kiddie pools give dogs a chance to splash and cool down. Waste bags are supplied at the park. A walking path around the perimeter of the Dog Park gives the two-legged friend a chance to burn a few calories, too.

Mandeville

Mandeville is forty miles north of Harvey. Pelican Bark Park is located at 63350 Pelican Drive. Pelican Bark Park is a four acre Dog Park with all the amenities you and your pup want in a Dog Park. This fully fenced grassy enclosure has water fountains, benches and a gazebo. The Dog Park is open from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. The addition of lights make it convenient for people to take their dogs out after work for a run. The cooler evening hours make it easier on both dog and person. Beach House located at 124 Girard Street serves lunch and dinner of sandwiches, salads in dog-friendly outdoor seating.

Gretna

Gretna is two miles northeast from Harvey. It is another small town surrounded by the very populated New Orleans metropolitan area. Gretna Dog Park located 3253 Claire Avenue has one large grassy fenced area for off leash socialization. This pleasant Dog Park has benches, shade, water, agility equipment and lots of good furry pals to sniff and run with. Dogs seem to get extra muddy after playing at Gretna, but fun doesn’t always have to mean clean. A stop at Poochie Bella’s Pet Grooming on 732 Westbank Expressway will wash all that dirt away, and can style the most fastidious of dogs.
