The city of Olathe nudges into the top 5 list as the fourth-largest and fourth most populated city in Kansas, and the name Olathe actually means beautiful in Shawnee language. It was named this by Dr. John T. Barton in 1857 because he thought the fields of flowers were so beautiful. Olathe is also a dog-lovers’ paradise with almost 30,000 dogs and plenty of dog-friendly things to do in town.
If you like hiking, the dog-lovers favorite is Shawnee Mission Park, which has 20 miles of dirt trails for all skill levels that take you through the woods, prairie grass, and verbena meadows. The park is 1,600 acres with a 20-acre lake, beach, campsites, restrooms, disc golf, BBQ pits, boating, and other amenities. If Fido still has energy to burn there is a 53-acre off-leash dog park with drinking water and plenty of seating.
Another great place for hiking is the Mill Creek Streamway Park, which goes from Nelson Island on the river and back to Olathe. There are 17 miles of trails for all skill levels that go through several recreational areas which is convenient because you can stop and rest, eat, or play along the way. You will probably meet lots of dog lovers along the trail or in the park, and they can give you more tips and inside information about the best places to go with your furbaby.
Hello! My name is Morgan and I'm an avid dog lover. My dog, Harry Truman, is my best friend who happens to have his own Instagram account - Harrytrumanthedog. I've grown up with dogs and believe they are the sweetest beings alive. The unconditional love they provide is priceless. I'd be honored to take care of your sweet dog, too.
