Houma is a melting pot of cultures, with roots in Cajun, Native American, and African traditions. As the town of Houma grows, so does its' pet population. More and more dog-friendly paths and parks are becoming accessible in the area.

Although Houma does not yet have its' own dog park, nearby Thibodaux is home to the Norman Swanner Dog Park. There's tons of space (and we mean a TON!) for your pooch to run free off-leash - in fact, the park covers 32,000 square feet! A small dog area, large dog area, covered pavilion, and park benches make this park a fantastic visit for both two-legged owners and four-legged friend.

Want to explore the beautiful marshes and wetlands that surround Houma? Several dog-friendly trails accommodate on-leash animals. The Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge Nature Trail is about a 45-minute loop that offers possible glimpses of rare birds and the notable American alligator. Similarly, the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge Boardwalk offers a short walk around the protected area.

The new Southdown Bike Trail in Houma also has a dog-friendly policy. Five miles of the trail are along a state highway, and the other three miles go through a more rural territory. For a short but scenic route, check out the Lockport Trail, which meanders through a cypress-covered forest.
