The quaint town of Council Grove is just 55 miles southwest of Topeka, and provides Fido-friendly neighbors and open green spaces throughout town. The town was created as a place for settlers to gather when traveling West and has continued as a small town with lots of history. If you are traveling through the area with your pooch, or you live in Council Grove full time, you will be able to take advantage of a veterinarian clinic on T Avenue just a mile from the center of town.

Fido will love spending time at the Custer Elm Park which is located on General Custer’s former property. You can pack a picnic lunch and some pooch treats and relax at one of the shaded picnic tables. There are restrooms available, and you can walk your pups around the area while they have a snifftastic time in the grass.

Durland Park off Railroad Avenue is another fun destination for Fido. There is a large open grassy field where your pooch can play a game of fetch, or just walk around the perimeter of the park and get some exercise. The historic Pioneer Jail is also in the park, and there is a large picnic pavilion. The kids can play on the playground, and you and your pooch can relax on a bench.

The best pup-friendly restaurant in town is the Trail Days Café & Museum. The restaurant is located in the 19th-century Rawlinson-Terwilliger Home that was part of the Santa Fe Trail. You will enjoy Old World, Early American, and American Indian cuisine at the outdoor tables with your furry pal.

Be sure to take advantage of the history and wilderness areas while exploring Council Grove with your pup.
