Awbury Arboretum and Park is a pawsome resource for dogs and their people in Philadelphia. Due to the delicate nature of the plants and flowers they showcase, many arboretums and botanic gardens don't allow dogs on their grounds at all. Those that do often bar dogs from certain parts of their gardens. All that Awbury Arboretum asks is that dogs keep out of the garden beds. This means you and your pup can explore this entire 55-acre historic property together.
A network of trails connects the different sections of Awbury Arboretum, making this a great place to bring your dog for a longer walk. You can pick up a map to plan your route or just wander and let serendipity (or your dog's nose) guide you. Maybe you'll contemplate your bond as you stroll peacefully through manicured English gardens or romp together through wide open wildflower fields. If you're looking for slightly wilder scenery, wetlands surround the ponds and historic water course and provide a haven for birds and other wildlife. Many heritage trees, or trees that are remarkable for their size, age, and beauty, grow on the property. You can even pick up a guide to learn more about them. You'll be able to identify over two dozen tree species after you're done.
You don't have to be a budding botanist to enjoy a day at Awbury Arboretum, though. This is as perfect a place to have a picnic and relax as it is to explore and log some miles. Admission is free, making Awbury Arboretum as accessible as any ordinary city park. More typical park sights and amenities like recreational facilities are available in the adjacent city park, which is managed separately, but is connected visually and geographically to the rest of the arboretum property. Another connected feature is the Awbury Agricultural Village, which is also set out from the main arboretum and which hosts an organic farm and community garden. Do be sure you bring water and waste bags, and keep this beautiful area as pristine as you found it.
There is so much to do and see here that you and your pup will want to come back again and again!
