Prepare for unexpected vet bills
Dusky's are an extremely interesting breed of dog - how can they not be interesting when they are a mix of a Dachshund and a Husky? This medium size dog comes from a background of intelligence and affection making them a perfect family pet. Dusky's are easy to train and love to play games. Depending on which parent breed your Dusky takes after most will affect their temperament, exercise needs and their size in general however, Dusky's all like to play! Set up one of these Dusky friendly activities for your pup ASAP.
Both Dachshunds and Siberian Huskies are hunting dogs so your Dusky's desire to hunt is going to be strong. Dachshunds are scent dogs and they were traditionally used to hunt using their keen sense of smell. Siberian Huskies, on the other hand, are more likely to chase and herd their prey. When you put these two hunting methods together, you will get a Dusky that is ready to hunt anything! Try a variety of hunting games to see which your Dusky likes the best (which genes they inherited the most!). You don't need real wild animals to satisfy your Dusky's need to hunt, a few things you have at home will do!
Siberian Huskies were bred to be working dogs. They would pull sleds, haul cargo and help their owners on hunts. This ability to be a powerful workforce may be diminished in the Dusky breed but it is still hidden in there somewhere! While a Dusky may be too small to pull a sled with people or lug cargo anywhere, there are plenty of jobs that they can do. Giving your dog a job will not only give them a physical exercise to do but also be very beneficial to their mental need to work and feel important. Find the perfect job for your dog by trying the following activities!Â
Siberian Huskies are most well known for being sled dogs. Their strong and athletic bodies could easily pull a sled across the snow no matter what the weight. A Dusky, however, may be a little too small and a little too "chunky" to pull a traditional sled. Skatejoring, on the other hand, may be something your Dusky can do! Since skatejoring involves pulling a person on a skateboard, it is a little easier than a sled as the wheels help with the forward momentum. A skateboard is also much lighter than a sled so your small pup should be able to handle the weight. As always, start off slow but definitely give this activity a try - your Dusky will love it!Â
Since Dusky's love water, head to a lake or ocean with your pup and lay in the water with them. Have your Dusky pull you around by a rope toy and "save" you! Not only will they get to play in the water but they will love having an important job!
While out on a walk with your Dusky, hunt squirrels together. When you or your pup spots a squirrel, take off running toward it! Your Dusky will love this game (just don't let them actually catch the squirrels!).
This fun breed of dog is a complete joy to own and is a delight to play with. There are just so many games that your Dusky will love! Hunting games to sled inspired games, finding a job to playing lifeguard, you are going to have a blast with your Dusky no matter which game you choose to start with. Don't forget to think of some good mind challenging games too - your Dusky is a smart pup!Â
