Introduction

Dusky's are an extremely interesting breed of dog - how can they not be interesting when they are a mix of a Dachshund and a Husky? This medium size dog comes from a background of intelligence and affection making them a perfect family pet. Dusky's are easy to train and love to play games. Depending on which parent breed your Dusky takes after most will affect their temperament, exercise needs and their size in general however, Dusky's all like to play! Set up one of these Dusky friendly activities for your pup ASAP.

Activity description

Both Dachshunds and Siberian Huskies are hunting dogs so your Dusky's desire to hunt is going to be strong. Dachshunds are scent dogs and they were traditionally used to hunt using their keen sense of smell. Siberian Huskies, on the other hand, are more likely to chase and herd their prey. When you put these two hunting methods together, you will get a Dusky that is ready to hunt anything! Try a variety of hunting games to see which your Dusky likes the best (which genes they inherited the most!). You don't need real wild animals to satisfy your Dusky's need to hunt, a few things you have at home will do!

Step
1
Treat hunt
It has been said that Dachshunds are controlled by their nose and their belly so setting up a treat hunting game for your dog is a perfect idea. Your Dusky will be able to use their sense of smell and get a nice treat as a reward at the end!
Step
2
Treat dig
When hunting for treats inside is no longer a challenge for your Dusky, try taking the game outside and burying your pup's treats. Your Dusky will have to use their sense of smell to find the treats and then their desire to dig to uncover them! Being allowed to dig and then rewarded is a Dusky's dream come true!
Step
3
Chase hunt
To satisfy the Siberian Husky side of your dog's hunting background, set up a game of chase. Your dog will love running after things so why not have them run after you? Let your Dusky chase you and then, turn around and chase them. Remember to keep the game light and fun by incorporating a few pets into the activity.

Activity description

Siberian Huskies were bred to be working dogs. They would pull sleds, haul cargo and help their owners on hunts. This ability to be a powerful workforce may be diminished in the Dusky breed but it is still hidden in there somewhere! While a Dusky may be too small to pull a sled with people or lug cargo anywhere, there are plenty of jobs that they can do. Giving your dog a job will not only give them a physical exercise to do but also be very beneficial to their mental need to work and feel important. Find the perfect job for your dog by trying the following activities!

Step
1
Dog backpack
Buy a doggy backpack for your Dusky and head out for a walk with it strapped onto them. Having extra weight and an object that they need to carry gives your Dusky a sense of purpose. You may even notice your pup walking as if they are on a mission! They will get that package where it needs to go! Add more weight as your Dusky gets accustomed to wearing the pack - it is a perfect place to store your water bottles for a long hike!
Step
2
Tug
Playing tug with your Dusky may seem like just a game but to them, it is a job. They need to get that rope out of your hand! You can also try sitting on a towel on the floor while you play tug and have your Dusky pull you around the house! This is perfect for a dog with a history in sled pulling.
Step
3
Pick up
Train your Dusky to put their toys away after they play. Not only is this super helpful to you (you won't have to pick up dog toys ever again!), it gives your Dusky a chore every day that they must complete. Pair your Dusky's success with a treat and they will be begging to pick up their toys!

Skateboard
Activity description

Siberian Huskies are most well known for being sled dogs. Their strong and athletic bodies could easily pull a sled across the snow no matter what the weight. A Dusky, however, may be a little too small and a little too "chunky" to pull a traditional sled. Skatejoring, on the other hand, may be something your Dusky can do! Since skatejoring involves pulling a person on a skateboard, it is a little easier than a sled as the wheels help with the forward momentum. A skateboard is also much lighter than a sled so your small pup should be able to handle the weight. As always, start off slow but definitely give this activity a try - your Dusky will love it!

Step
1
Equipment search
Head to a pup supply store or look online to find the equipment you will need, the most important being a well fitting harness for your dog. You want the harness to be snug on your Dusky but not so tight that it is uncomfortable. Your dog should be pulling with their chest and not with their neck so a harness is necessary- no skatejoring with just a collar!
Step
2
Start slow
Head out with your board and your pup. Begin by having your dog suited up in their harness and attach the leash to the skateboard. Call your pup so that they move forward, pulling the skateboard behind them. Try running alongside your dog to get them accustomed to pulling the board and running.
Step
3
Get on and go!
Once your Dusky is enjoying pulling the skateboard, add some weight to it gradually until they are comfortable enough to pull you! Once you reach this step, there is no stopping the new skatejoring pair! Make skatejoring a daily activity for you and your Dusky and your pup will always be happy.

More Fun Ideas...

Lifeguard

Since Dusky's love water, head to a lake or ocean with your pup and lay in the water with them. Have your Dusky pull you around by a rope toy and "save" you! Not only will they get to play in the water but they will love having an important job!

Walk and Hunt

While out on a walk with your Dusky, hunt squirrels together. When you or your pup spots a squirrel, take off running toward it! Your Dusky will love this game (just don't let them actually catch the squirrels!).

Conclusion

This fun breed of dog is a complete joy to own and is a delight to play with. There are just so many games that your Dusky will love! Hunting games to sled inspired games, finding a job to playing lifeguard, you are going to have a blast with your Dusky no matter which game you choose to start with. Don't forget to think of some good mind challenging games too - your Dusky is a smart pup!Â
