Introduction

If you live in an apartment, or you’re starting a new career in retirement, then you may find a Smooth Chisoxy will become man’s best friend. This little pup is a cross between a Smooth Fox Terrier and a Chihuahua, and they are a small toy breed with a lot of love to give – but not too much. They are more suitable for individuals rather than families with children, or households with other pets. A Smooth Chisoxy can be a challenge to entertain, given their stubborn nature and natural dislike for dogs. As a result, trips to the dog park and family rides in the car aren’t going to appeal. However, these activities below might.

Activity description

Whether you live in an apartment or a house, you will find that a game involving a ball is going to be a fun pastime for your Smooth Chisoxy. You can play with it inside when it’s raining, outside when it’s warm, and taking part in the fun is free while being fast-paced as well. As a result, after 20 minutes of throwing a ball and your dog bringing it back to you, they will be absolutely exhausted! Not every dog, including the Smooth Chisoxy, is a natural ball fetcher, so it might be time to grab two balls and a treat and get the schooling session underway!

Step
1
Chase
The first step is to get your Smooth Chisoxy interested in the ball in the first place. After all, it’s no good throwing it for them to ignore it completely! You can garner this attention by encouraging them to go after the ball – even if it means you need to get to it first, encouraging them over with treats and toys. Your dog will firstly come over and show interest in the ball, grabbing it. You can then give them a treat, removing the toy. Repeat the process until they make the connection between chasing and getting a reward.
Step
2
Retrieve
If you have mastered getting your Smooth Chisoxy to chase the ball, the next battle is to get them to bring it back. This bit can be tricky, and you may need to coax them again with another toy, throwing it in the opposite direction to where they are now. They then have to run past you to get it, reiterating that notion of coming back to you once they have chased something. You can then work on getting them to bring the toy back to you by using a trigger word such as “bring” or “get” and coaxing them to bring it back at least halfway with a treat.

PVC pipe

Drill
End caps
Activity description

If you are looking for a fun rainy-day activity that won’t cost the earth, then it might be time to get your thinking cap on. Rather than pay a fortune at a pet store for a food puzzle, you can make one at home using odds and ends lying around the property. A popular DIY food puzzle is a shaker involving PVC pipe, two end caps, a drill, and treats. It doesn’t take long to make, but it can entertain your Smooth Chisoxy for 10 minutes or even longer – giving you a break from being their main source of entertainment.

Step
1
Gather materials
To build your food shaker toy, you are going to need one piece of clean PVC pipe, two end caps, a drill, and your Smooth Chisoxy’s favorite treats. Make sure the tube is free of dirt, debris, and any toxic substances. If you don’t have any pipe lying around, you may need to purchase a brand new piece from a plumbing outlet store along with two caps. The best treats are those that are low in fat and salt – reducing the risk of your little Smooth Chisoxy’s tummy growing any larger!
Step
2
Build the puzzle
Put the cap on one end of the pipe to give it stability, then attach a large drill piece to your drill. It needs to be large enough for the size treat you have. You can then put the treats inside the pipe, attach the other end of the cap (not permanently), and roll it around on the ground to test it. Do the treats fall out freely? Does it make enough noise?
Step
3
Play
Your Smooth Chisoxy may not understand right away what you want them to do with the pipe. After all, it doesn’t look entertaining! So, you may need to demonstrate. In the middle of the floor, or outside, roll the pipe around and let the treats fall out freely. It will be mere seconds before your pup catches on and realizes that this could be the best toy ever!

Bubble bath liquid

Bath
Activity description

Many dog owners struggle to make bath time fun for their dog. As soon as they hear the water running in the bathroom, many go diving for cover! However, given your Smooth Chisoxy’s small size, you are at an advantage to other dog owners. They are quicker to clean and easier to handle! Therefore, why not make bath time a fun experience and an activity, as opposed to a chore for you both? It doesn’t cost a lot, you only need bubble bath liquid, a bath, toys and a treat, and 20 minutes up your sleeve. It’s entirely possible for a dog to enjoy a bath after all.

Step
1
Get excited
One thing many dog owners fail to do is get excited and show enthusiasm for bath time. As you know, adding energy to your voice makes most dogs lose the plot with excitement. You can do the same at bath time. Make it a high-energy occasion, get the toys out, give them treats, and rev up their excitement levels so they’ll be diving into the bath as opposed to diving out of the house!
Step
2
Get prepared
For the best bathing experience, you need a few things. Add a non-slip mat to the bath, make sure the water temperature is just so, and include toys and treats. Bathing shouldn’t be a tedious chore! You can even fill the bath with bubbles to distract your pup from the fact you are cleaning them at the same time. Make sure any bubble solution you buy is non-toxic and safe for animal use.
Step
3
Bath time
Now that you’ve set the scene, you can begin bathing. Make sure the water is up to your dog's chest but not high enough that your pup can’t touch the ground. What’s more, don’t drag the process out. Give your furry friend time to chase toys in the water and eat treats, but not long enough to get cold. Remember, your pint-sized pup does not have a lot of body fat to retain heat! The most important thing is to make bath time consistent and fun from the beginning.

Weasel

Many small dogs such as a Smooth Chisoxy like to chase small critters. If you don’t want to give them the opportunity but you want to distract them, then buy them a weasel. A weasel is a fabric soft toy attached to a battery-powered ball. The ball moves along the ground, flipping and moving the weasel. Your pup will have the time of their life!

Bubbles

Does your dog like to chase anything and everything? Then they will love bubbles - big and small. Buy a wand and non-toxic bubble mixture and use it on a sunny day outside. They can run, chase, and pop bubbles with their mouths, all before retiring indoors for a long and well-deserved nap!

Conclusion

Owning a Smooth Chisoxy offers any dog owner the opportunity get creative. As you won’t find dog socialization all too beneficial, you need to think outside the box with solo activities you both will enjoy. You are sure to get a pawsitive response partaking in these activities above!
