Introduction

Developed by mixing the Golden Retriever and the Chow Chow, the Golden Chow Retriever is a hybrid dog that has slowly become popular in the “designer dog” category. While both parent breeds are fluffy, their similarities end there. Thus, the personality of Golden Chow Retrievers can vary from one dog to another. In general, you can expect this breed to be energetic, devoted and wary of strangers (because of the protective nature of the Chow Chow). Because of their watchful instinct, it is ideal to socialize Golden Chows as early as possible. They also need to engage in a variety of physical and mental activities to satisfy their needs

Activity description

The moderately-active Golden Chow Retriever absolutely adores spending time outdoors. The challenge with this breed is choosing an activity that caters to the preferences of both parent breeds. For instance, Golden Retrievers are energetic and would love to play for long periods of time. They even love getting in the water as they are naturally good swimmers. On the other hand, Chow Chows can be lazy and would prefer to just lounge around on a soft surface. Plus, they can easily overheat during hot weather. The perfect activity that mixes all these preferences is stand-up paddleboarding. Through this activity, you get to enjoy the outdoors and dip into the water with your pooch. When they get tired, you and your dog can simply relax on your board. It’s the perfect summer activity for you and your Golden Chow Retriever.

Step
1
Attachment to the board
One of the key things to enjoying this activity is to get your dog to stay on the board. This can be challenging given that Golden Chow Retrievers love to move around. Therefore, you should get your pooch to form an attachment with the board before you attempt to go in the water. Place the board in a room where your dog frequently hangs out. You can place your dog’s food bowl or favorite treats on the board to get them to hop on. This process can take days or even weeks so be patient.
Step
2
In the water
When your pooch feels comfortable hanging out on the board, you can then try out how they will fare once in the water. Go to a lake or beach to test out paddleboarding with your dog. It is ideal to choose a body of water that is calm to avoid the board from capsizing or your dog from falling off. Initially, start off in a shallow part of the water. If your dog remains calm, you can give them a treat as a reward.
Step
3
Enjoy paddleboarding
Once you feel like your dog is ready for the real thing, equip them with a flotation device. Get your Golden Chow Retriever to jump on top of the board and carefully ride the board as well. Slowly paddle out into the water. You can even jump into the lake or ocean with your dog to cool off but be sure to keep an eye on them.

DSA Certification
Activity description

You are probably familiar with boy scouts but did you know that there is a canine version? Yes, your furry friend can become a dog scout through Dog Scouts of America. Established in 1995, DSA is a non-profit organization that aims to promote responsible dog ownership and make the lives of dogs and their owners more meaningful. They believe that canines are meant to learn new things and participate in as many activities as they can. What’s great about DSA is that they do not discriminate against any breed, which means that your Golden Chow Retriever can become a part of the organization.

Step
1
Get in touch with DSA
In order for your best furry buddy to become a dog scout, you first have to get in touch with the DSA and find out how to become a member. They will likely have a local group in your area. In case they don’t, you can also ask them how to start one. Ask about the requirements, fees and all other essential information.
Step
2
Take DSA's certification exam
The key requirement for becoming a dog scout for DSA is to pass their certification exam. This test can be carried out either via video or in front of a Scoutmaster. Once you pay the necessary fees and pass the exam, your pooch is officially given the “Dog Scout” title and you will become a “Dog Scout parent”.
Step
3
Participate in activities
As a dog scout, your pooch can earn and collect more merit badges by participating in various activities organized by the DSA. One of the most common ways to earn a merit badge is by attending DSA’s Dog Scout Camp. They also offer other activities such as community service, geocaching, therapy work and cleanups.

Activity description

One of the things that most Americans have in common is that they love to drink. Whether it is beer, wine or any other form of liquor, the majority of people in the United States have a thing for alcohol. For alcohol lovers who are also furparents, spending a day in a winery or brewery that welcomes canines is a great way to combine two things that you love into a single wonderful experience. Fortunately, more and more of these places are opening their doors to their customers’ four-legged companions. Some even have special menus and organized events for your canine pal.

Step
1
Look for pet-friendly drinking spots
Nowadays, more and more drinking spots have changed their policies about bringing of pets. Do a quick online search of pet-friendly breweries or wineries in your area. You may even look for places that are close to each other and pay each of them a visit. To confirm, call ahead and double check if you can bring your Golden Chow Retriever with you.
Step
2
Enjoy your day
Once you have confirmed, pack some food and water for your Golden Chow Retriever. Also, don’t forget to bring a leash as some places require dogs to be kept on a leash. Have some waste bags ready as well, especially if you will be spending the entire day outside. It is important to always clean up after your dog. While some places offer doggy menus for canine companions, it is best to bring your own food and drinks for your dog to make sure that they are covered. Enjoy your day sipping wine or beer and bonding with your furbaby.

Drive-In Movie

Drive-in movies are becoming less and less common so you should take advantage of it while it is still around. Whether it is an outdoor movie event or a drive-in theater in your area, take your dog out for a movie date. Bring some food and drinks and enjoy your time together while watching the film.

Meet up with local dogs

Doggy playdates are a great form of socialization. This activity is particularly beneficial for a Golden Chow Retriever, a breed that can be quite wary of others. By exposing your pooch to other humans and canines, they get a chance to become comfortable around others. Plus, you get to meet other dog owners and set up more playdates in the future.

Conclusion

Smart, good-natured and playful, the Golden Chow Retriever has all the makings of a great pet and companion. Their loyalty to their owners is really admirable. However, they can be too overprotective at times, which is why they need someone that will train them firmly. Even though this breed might require some patience and extra care, it is but a small price to pay for the unconditional love and devotion that you will receive in return.
