Activity description

The Italian Cavalier Greyhound is a breed that aims to please. They want their owner to give them love and affection and will go to ends lengths to get it! Due to this need to make their owners happy, this breed is very easy to train. This means that you can teach them lots of tricks and they will pick up on them quickly making it rewarding for you as well (isn't it nice when your pup listens and follows directions right away!). Keep in mind that this is an activity that never has to end. You can teach your dog new tricks every week if you'd like or keep practicing the ones they know - forever!

Step
1
Teach the basics
Begin by teaching your dog the basic necessary "tricks" that are imperative to their safety and happiness. For example, teaching your dog to learn their name and how to come when their name is called are ones you should not skip! Use treats, verbal commands, motions and hands-on praise when training to ensure your dog knows when they do a good job!
Step
2
Train a little harder
Move into the slightly more advanced tricks that are still ones most dogs should know. Sit, lie down, paw and stay are a good place to start. Think about teaching your pup to go to their bed upon command or to fetch as well. All simple enough, especially for a smarty like your Italian Cavalier Greyhound.

Tricky tricks
Now it's time to think outside the box! Train your dog to do some more advanced skills that are either useful or just purely for fun. Training your dog to bring you your shoes, for example, would be very useful while teaching them to jump through a hoop would be fun! Anything goes.

Activity description

Italian Cavalier Greyhounds are known to be a little bit shy and this shyness can cause them anxiety. While they are a very loving breed, they will get scared if you raise your voice, if they are in an unfamiliar situation, or if they are separated from you. Helping them cope with this anxiety and overcome the shyness is a skill that you should definitely try to teach. This fun game not only helps them learn to avoid situations that make them scared but also give them a little exercise! Grab your best walking shoes and get ready to help your Italian Cavalier Greyhound combat anxiety.

Step
1
Walk ready
Get your dog ready to go for a long walk by making sure they are well hydrated, have a good secure leash and collar, and are excited to go! Make sure you grab a pocket full of treats as well as this walk is going to involve some training and training deserves treats!
Step
2
Run away
Start off by walking as you always do; then, say your dog's name to get their attention and when they look at you, say "Run away!" and then begin to run. Your dog will automatically run as well, not exactly sure why as of yet but they will be excited just to be moving fast! Stop after a few seconds and give your dog a treat and continue your walk as usual.
Step
3
Apply it
Repeat the command "run away" followed by a quick sprint several times. Soon your dog will learn that this command means to run fast. The next time your dog is in a stressful situation, tell them to "run away". If you are outside and encounter another dog that makes your pup anxious, "run away!". If you are home and your dog seems scared, teach them to "run away" to their bed or safe spot. Your dog will take this command as a way to avoid anxiety and stress and also see it as a fun game - hey, they get a treat every time you say it right?

Activity description

One thing that both the Italian Greyhound side and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel side of your dog's heritage have in common is that both breeds love to chase. Greyhounds are natural hunters and have a long history of chasing prey. Greyhounds who are race dogs also practice chasing when they run after the toy rabbit in every race, trying to be the first dog to catch it. While Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not hunting dogs, they also enjoy a good chase and will gladly run after a ball. This goes without saying that Italian Cavalier Greyhounds are big into chasing. So, with that in mind, here is what you can do…

Step
1
Fetch
Playing fetch with your Italian Cavalier Greyhound is the most obvious way to satisfy their desire to chase. Thanks to their small size, your dog doesn't even need too much space to play this beloved dog game. Just throw the ball and watch as your dog happily runs after it!
Step
2
Flirt pole
If you have never seen a flirt pole then it is time you looked into them as it is the perfect toy for your Italian Cavalier Greyhound. A long stick with a rope tied at the end and a feather at the end of the rope is such a basic concept but one your dog will love. Hole the pole and dangle the feather for your pup and watch how happily they chase it around - you don't even need to get out of your seat!
Step
3
Chase me!
Chasing you around may be one of your dog's favorite things to go after. When you run around the house or yard and call your dog, they will instantly light up with pure joy. Having you play with them and being able to run quickly around with you in an Italian Cavalier Greyhound's dream - they are running and they are making you happy, their two favorite things!

Cuddle Time

it is important to schedule time to really cuddle this breed of dog. They live for affection and if they don't get enough, they will get antsy and potentially destructive. Curl up with your dog and relax together - that is what a pup is for after all!

Dig Mat

Look into buying a squeaky dig mat for your dog. This breed loves to dig and providing a sensory mat for them to paw at will not only satisfy this need but also prevent them from digging up your yard!

Conclusion

Italian Cavalier Greyhounds are such a fantastic breed of dog. They are sweet and gentle, playful and spunky, smart and willing to learn - how could you ask for anything more! Make sure to keep your little one happy by planning activities and games that revolve around them. Learning new tricks, playing different kinds of chase, and teaching them to cope with any tricky personality traits are all things you and your pup will love to do together.
