Prepare for unexpected vet bills
The Montenegrin Mountain Hound is a rare dog breed originating from the Balkans, from the mountains of Montenegro. They have the same origin as other Balkan hounds, such as the Serbian Hound and Serbian Tricolor Hound, and they are a medium sized dog. Back in the day, Montenegrin Mountain Hounds were used to hunt foxes, hares, and smaller game, and only sometimes were included in the hunts for deer and wild boar. Before 1997, this breed was called Yugoslavian Mountain Hound, but the name was changed by the FCI. Montenegrin Mountain Hounds are scent hounds, meaning that they primarily use their sense of scent to hunt, which can help you come up with interesting activities for them.Â
It is all in the name! The Montenegrin Mountain Hound is, as their name states, a mountain dog! Montenegro is a small country known for its mountainous terrains, so these dogs had to adjust to their surroundings and learn how to behave in sometimes harsh conditions of the mountainous region. Therefore, they are always more than willing to go on a long hike, especially in the rough terrain. If you are an experienced alpinist or a passionate mountain hiker, next time you go on an adventure, take your dog with you, they will love it! These dogs have a high level of energy, meaning that they welcome any type of exercise, and a long, challenging hike can be the perfect activity for them.
Your Montenegrin Mountain Hound is a scent hound, which means that they use their lovely little nose to hunt their prey. You can refine this skill they have by stimulating their noses and teaching them how to search for things and find hidden objects. They will love this game, especially on a rainy day when you cannot really go outside, and the day gets boring and long. Montenegrin Mountain Hounds love exercise, as they are quite energetic, so stimulating them even on a rainy day is a great way to prevent depression and to keep them occupied until the sun starts to shine again.Â
On the days when you want some more action in your life, you can try bikejoring with your Montenegrin Mountain Hound. Even though they are not mush dogs, you can adjust the game to keep it entertaining enough, but not too strenuous for your pup. This game will surely satisfy your dog’s needs for exercise and make the day more fun just by going outside and running, tiring themselves in the process, which results in a great night of sleep. It is a tad more challenging than your regular run, but exponentially more fun!Â
Take your pup to the local agility track and let them go through all the obstacles! They will enjoy running through the track and overcoming the obstacles!
On a rainy day when you just cannot go out, get a Kong, some peanut butter, and some treats, and let your dog kill some time by trying to get all the tasty snacks out of the toy!
As you can see, being an owner of a Montenegrin Mountain Hound is fun, but it is not for the ones on the lazy side who cannot be bothered to go out and exercise with their dog. These dogs need their daily activities to stay happy and healthy, and by participating in these fun exercises with them you will strengthen your love and make you the best of friends!
