Introduction

New Zealand Headings are descended from Border Collies. They were bred to herd sheep and adapt to quick movements and make split second decisions. They are active dogs who need mental stimulation otherwise they will get frustrated. It is not recommended that you let one of these dogs become simply a house pet since this will cause them to get frustrated and start acting out. If you do not allow your dog to get the proper mental and physical stimulation, they will begin to behave strangely. Some have noticed that when New Zealand Headings get bored, they start herding small children or animals.

Muffin pan
Dry dog food pellets
Activity description
Sometimes keeping your dog busy can be tiring. Especially if you have had a tough day and do not have the energy to spend an hour or so playing fetch or coming up with creative games for your dog. This is not a crime, and it does not mean that you are a bad dog owner. It means you are human. Thankfully, there are several ways to keep your dog busy without having to make the trip to the pet store or tiring yourself out even more. This easy interactive feeder will make your dog work for their food and you can go relax for a little while.
Step
1
Find a muffin pan
This will only work if you are a baker or have baking pans. Take an ordinary muffin pan (or cupcake pan, whichever suits your fancy) and turn it over. If your dog is still a puppy, then you can use a mini-tray if you have one. If you do not, you could always try using an empty egg carton, although this might not work as well as you want it to.
Step
2
Fill the feeder
Turn the pan upside down, and strew a handful of dry dog food pellets in between the raised spaces. Put the pan in front of your dog, and usually they will be able to figure out the rest. They will have to use some interesting methods to get the food.
Step
3
Watch the fun
When they have eaten all the food, you can add some more. It will be very funny watching your dog trying to get the food from the oddly shaped pan and it will provide mental stimulation for your dog. Basically, it is a win-win and you get to watch some television in peace for a while.

Box of toys
Activity description
Every dog has a box of toys somewhere in the house, and every dog owner knows the struggle of constantly having to pick up dog toys. This activity makes them pick up their own toys and exercises their brains and bodies. It gives you a nice chance to get revenge for all the times you had to clean up after them. Good-naturedly, of course. The point is, you're going to have fun with this game and it can be played from the comfort of your couch or lawn chair. All you need to do is sit back and enjoy the show.
Step
1
Arrange the toys
Take the toy box, and empty it. When you begin, you can keep the radius small, but the point is to spread the toys out a bit. Now, put the box in front of your seat.
Step
2
Teach them the challenge
Help your dog through the first round. Show them what you expect from them, namely to pick up a toy and put it in the box. Once they have done it the first time, point to the next toy, then the next until all the toys have been picked up.
Step
3
Throw the toys
Now the fun can begin. Sit down, and make them pick up the toys again. But as they pick up one, throw another one out. Continue with this for a while, throwing the toys further and further away. It is sort of like fetch, but you're also helping your dog feel like they're doing something different for a change.

Nose Hunt

This is a fun game that you can play anywhere, any time. All you need to do is hide a few treats and help your dog track them. It is like a treasure hunt where your dog gets to use their senses to the full. The great thing is that you can make it as elaborate or as simple as you want.

Catch The Bubbles

Since New Zealand Headings have been bred to follow quick movements, their reflexes are amazing. This activity will allow them to use this inborn skill and have fun while doing it. All you need to do is blow some bubbles, and let them catch it. The results can be very funny and entertaining.

Conclusion

New Zealand Headings were bred to herd sheep and protect their owners. They are excitable dogs with quick reflexes who get bored easily. But they are also lovely dogs who make wonderful pets. You might not be able to turn them into a quiet housemate, but that doesn't mean that you can't spend special time together exercising and keeping busy. You can go for a picnic, keep them busy with an interactive feeder or just play fetch with them. Keeping your dog busy is not a chore, it can be the highlight of your day. The more thought you put into your activities, the closer you two will become.
