Activity description
You may have noticed that your Shi Beagle has an incredible endurance and can run around for hours without ever showing signs of tiring. This is because your dog has inherited this stamina from both of the parent breeds, especially from the Shiba Inu side. Bred exclusively as hunting dogs, Shiba Inus have an impressive ability to run for hours at high speeds without stopping - they just want to catch their prey! This has carried over to your Shi Beagle who also is an impressive runner. But rather than have your dog just go for a run, why don’t you also teach them how to fly through an agility course? Maybe the obstacles will tired your pup out!
Step
1
Invest in equipment
Invest in some agility equipment or, if you want to start off slowly, look for a dog agility club in your area. You can also try setting up an agility course using things you find around your house. When starting off, you want at least three obstacles for your Shi Beagle to tackle- not too many to be overwhelming but not too easy as to be boring!
Step
2
Train
Train your dog how to complete each obstacle individually. For example, if they are suppose to walk across a skinny plank, teach this trick first and have your dog practice again and again. Then, move onto the next obstacle! Finally, link each obstacle together to make the course. Maybe your pup will walk across a plank then jump through a hoop and finally maneuver through poles. Now they are getting the idea!
Step
3
Compete
Keep up the practice a few times a week, whether at the club or at home. Once your dog has gotten exceedingly good at agility courses, look for local competitions where they can really show off their skills. Your pup will compete on how quickly they can run the course and also how accurately. A great way to use your Shi Beagle's skills and natural energy.

Treats
Activity description
If you already own a Shi Beagle or you have just been around this breed a time or two, you already are well aware of their loud, constant bark. It can be non stop! This tendency to bark comes from the Shiba Inu side of your dog's make-up and is even sometimes referred to as the Shiba scream as the bark sounds more like screaming than a typical dog barking. While many find this trait to be tough to bear, you can turn this characteristic into something useful! Make that Shi Beagle a guard dog! The scream alone is enough to make any potential burglar run away. An activity done at home, the only expense is perseverance. The occasional treat is needed, too.
Step
1
Bark
Begin by training your dog what the word “bark” is. You can do this by using the word in your day to day like whenever your dog barks. Simply say “bark” when you hear your pup and enforce that word by pairing it with a treat. Just go about your day, saying “bark” whenever your does so and soon they will understand the word.
Step
2
Bark now
When your dog is not barking, go over to them with a handful of treats and command them to “bark”. If your dog does as asked, reward them! If your pup looks at you a little confused, repeat and keep trying until they do bark on command! Now you can instruct your pup to bark on cue anytime!
Step
3
Bark at that
If you would like your dog to bark when triggered by an outdoor sound, knock on the door or doorbell and practice these scenarios in conjunction with commanding them to bark. Keep practicing (even enlist a few “strangers” to come to your door) and your Shi Beagle will be the best guard dog yet!

Dog Bone
Boxes
Treats
Activity description
Looking for a cheap activity that will allow your pup to shine? Your Shi Beagle comes from a long line of hunting dogs and while the Shiba Inu side is great at stamina and chasing, the Beagle side is fantastic at using their nose to track. However, you may not have wild game for your beagle to track and chase. So instead, there are many ways in which you can get your beagle to use their nose as nature intended. With these simple activities, you and your Shi Beagle can be playing in a matter of minutes and the games will be satisfying, mentally challenging and fun! Sounds like the perfect combination.
Step
1
Box flip
Grab a bunch of empty boxes and place them upside down on the floor for your Shi Beagle to see. Let them sniff them and explore a little and then, show your pup a treat and hide it under a box. Let your dog use their nose to discover where the treat went and then knock the box over to get the reward!
Step
2
Treasure hunt
Leave a trail of treats across your house that leads to a larger treat pile (the treasure!). Have your pup follow the trail to the prize. Next time, leave the treasure hidden somewhere but eliminate the trail of treats. Now your Shi Beagle will have to use their nose even more!
Step
3
Bone dig
Bury a super yummy smelling dog bone in your backyard, keep the soil loose and a little obvious so your pup is sure to see that something is amiss along with being able to smell the bone and fresh soil. Your dog will have fun tracking and digging with this fun game!

Training

Shi Beagles are smart yet very independent which means they may be difficult to train. Practice skills with your dog again and again to ensure they understand and are willing to obey commands!

Fetch Toy

With a dog who has endless amount of energy like a Shi Beagle, investing in a ball throwing toy is a great idea. These toys will throw a tennis ball to your dog over and over, as long as they would like!

Conclusion

Shi Beagles can be quite a handful. They are active and have a mind of their own. They tend to bark loudly and love to be right by your side. Keep this breed happy by setting up games daily that you and your dog can play together. It is important to challenge your dog’s mind and make sure they get some of their energy out on a daily basis! These activities are the perfect place to start.
