You can cater to their need for exercise, stimulation, and cooling down with water fun as an activity. In as little as an hour, you can cool your dog down with a paddling pool, toys, a water gun, and a hose. If you already own these items, it's going to be an affordable activity, but it can be expensive if you need to start from scratch. However, it's an effortless activity that will do you and your furry friend a world of good in summer.

Dip in the pool
The first step is to go for a dip in the paddling pool. Fill it to around your dog's chest area, or slightly under it. Your Smooth Foxy Russell is not a tall dog, so they will not require a lot of water. To get them interested in it, throw a few toys in with them. Therefore, on a rainy day that offers no opportunity to get outdoors, turn to food puzzles. The best part is, they are affordable. All you need for supplies are a plastic bottle, cardboard rolls, shoe box, a muffin tin, and treats. Most people have these items lying around their house. It also has a normal difficulty level and will puzzle your furry friend for at least an hour.

Plastic shaker
If you usually throw your soda bottles away after you finish with them, then this activity will see you storing them instead. Keep the recycling, remove the label, and add a handful of small kibble that will fit in the opening. You can then leave the lid off for your dog to try and get the treats out of the bottle or drill a few holes in the sides. Your Smooth Foxy Russell will need to roll the cylinder along the floor trying to release the kibble from its plastic prison!

It might be a slow process, but it's one that makes your dog think and work to achieve their supper!

Smooth Foxy Russells are very compulsive, often not resting until they achieve what they set out to do. In most cases, this can be quite a hindrance - mainly if it's something they shouldn't be doing - like digging up your flower bed! In the case of food puzzles, however, it works in your favor. You can set them down with a shoebox, fill it with cardboard tubes set upright, then put kibble in each of these rolls. It's now up to your dog to work out how to get to the bottom of the rolls. Warning: this puzzle might result in mass cardboard destruction!

Smooth Foxy Russells love to learn, it's one of their many fun attributes. If you like to teach, then it's a match made in heaven! When you want to provide your Smooth Foxy Russell with as much stimulation as possible, treat them to a new skill such as jumping through a hoop. Smooth Foxy Russells do exceptionally well with agility training, so they are bound to be a standout with this task as well. It's also affordable, given that you only need to buy a hula hoop and treats, and it has an average difficulty level too. Set aside two or three 10-minute sessions a day to teach your dog how to jump through a hoop.

To start teaching your dog how to jump through a hoop, hold it up with the bottom rim on the ground. Hold a treat through one side of it, encouraging your Smooth Foxy Russell to walk through and get the treat. When they do, say your trigger word "jump" and give them a treat. Repeat this process until they confidently walk through.

Most Smooth Foxy Russells will see something move and will immediately chase it, so there is every reason to believe that a game of fetch will become their favorite pastime.
