Activity description

On a beautiful and hot summer’s day, there is nothing more freeing and exhilarating than going for a dip at your local watering hole. Why not take your Standard Border Schnollie along for the trip? When they are struggling to cool down, your dog will enjoy being able to play with a toy in the water, or swim around and burn off their energy. This free activity is also straightforward, will only take an hour of your time, and requires the use of a leash, toy, and towel. You may find that given their herding instincts, you are also best to take them to a sparsely populated area to play.

Choose a spot

When the sun’s beating down, it’s easy for your brain to fog up so you struggle to think about where you can take your dog. Consider their personality. Are they easily distracted? Do they try to herd other animals? You can bring them to a local lake, river, or beach at a less popular time of day, or even put up a pool in your backyard. However, this activity is one you can do on a regular basis, taking up an hour of your time. It’s the perfect opportunity to get in some physical exercise while also benefiting your dog’s social skills.

Flyball might look like a complex game, but it’s easier than you think. You have to break it down into steps. Firstly, you need to teach your dog how to jump agility hurdles. Once they master that, the remaining steps fall into place. After hurdles, focus on fetch - having your Standard Border Schnollie chase a ball and retrieve it. Then, work on retrieving a ball that you have placed somewhere.

Once your dog can run through obstacles, fetch, then retrieve, focus on the trigger ball box. The ball will sit on the box. There is a spring-loaded mechanism that will trigger the panel, releasing the ball. Your pup must jump on the panel. Practice makes perfect, so after working tirelessly on the steps above, it’s time to work on your pooch running over the hurdles, then launching off the trigger box, and returning over the hurdles with the ball. You can also spend three hours or more walking at your own pace while enjoying being out with man’s best friend. For this free activity, you are going to need a decent fitness level, a leash, doggy waste bag, and water.
