In the case of a Wire Foxy Russell, you are mixing a Jack Russell Terrier and a Wire Fox Terrier, two dogs who love to hunt and run and who will be loyal to their family until the end. Activity description
There are likely going to be times when you need to leave your Wire Foxy Russell while you do chores, or home alone while you go to work. The problem is, this breed hates being by themselves. If you have ever left your pup, you may have come home to find they had been a little destructive, anxious and lonely - not a good combination! However, there are ways to help your Wire Foxy Russell overcome their fear of being alone and all of these tips are quick to set up for your pup. Most of these activities are free and can be done any time of year, regardless of weather. That sounds perfect!
Step
1
Dog treat puzzle
Wire Foxy Russells are smart dogs and they need to have their mind exercised as well as their bodies. Buy a dog treat puzzle and fill it with your pup's favorite treats. When you need to get some chores accomplished around the home, give your dog the puzzle and slip away while they try their hardest to open the puzzle and get to their prize.
Step
2
Sing to me
When you need to leave your dog alone, perhaps to go to work or for an appointment, turn on the radio or TV before you go. Having the sound of a person's voice playing all day will soothe your dog and hopefully keep them calm while you are gone. See which music your dog likes the best (maybe that Wire Foxy Russell is a country dog or a classical dog - who knows!) and stick to that channel for familiarity.
Step
3
Treat search
Hide a few of your dog's favorite treats around the house before you need to leave. As you walk out, ask your pup where the treats are and your inquisitive dog will likely put their nose to the ground and start sniffing. Make the treats harder to find every time you leave to keep your dog challenged. Be sure to hide them in areas your pup is allowed to frequent.

Tunnels
Activity description
Terriers have been used for centuries as hunting dogs, tracking and chasing small vermin through all types of conditions. Since most of the prey that terriers hunted were ground-dwelling animals, this breed of dog will gladly go right into a dark tunnel, digging through the ground to find what they are looking for. While your Wire Foxy Russell may not be an active hunting dog, you can still train them to search dark tunnels for a prize by teaching them how to be an Earthdog. This activity is best when played outside on a nice day and while a tunnel system may cost a little bit to set up, the price is well worth it!
Step
1
Tunnel set up
Earthdog training involves having your Wire Foxy Russell run through a dark tunnel system, using their instincts to guide them toward their prize. While you can purchase real Earthdog tunnels, you can also make them from convenient cardboard boxes! Set up your tunnel and then get ready to play!
Step
2
Treat placement
Place a few of your dog's favorite treats inside the tunnel, keeping them close to the entrance at first. Encourage your Wire Foxy Russel to go into the tunnel, showing them the treats inside. Once your dog has gotten used to going into the dark, hide the treats further back in the tunnel, forcing your pup to use their nose to find their treats in the dark.
Step
3
Competitions
Once your pup has mastered your tunnel, switch the design of the tunnel to keep them actively using their senses to find their prizes. Once your Wire Foxy Russell has gotten really good, enter them into an Earthdog competition where they will compete against other Earthdogs, racing through the tunnels to discover who is the fastest pup!

Tennis Ball

Activity description
Wire Foxy Russells love to run. With so much energy in that tiny body, they have to run in order to get it all out! However, this breed is not well suited for long distance runs, instead, they will do much better sprinting quickly for short periods of time. These activities are perfect for letting your dog race around, burning off all that pent up vigor. While most of these steps are best done outside on a nice day when your dog can really stretch their legs, there are ways to run inside as well! Running is completely free, so leave your wallet at home and get ready to race!
Step
1
Run together
Grab your running shoes, put on your dog's collar and leash and get ready to go for a quick sprint around the block. When you head outside, start running and let your dog set the pace - you'll likely be in for a quick run! This breed will get tired quickly so don't go too far from home, under a mile will suffice!
Step
2
Fetch
Playing a game of fetch is a great way to let your Wire Foxy Russell run as fast as they can. Throw the ball far for your dog and watch their little legs go. As they return the ball to you, immediately throw the ball again so that they never stop. This game of constant fetch will tire your dog out for sure.
Step
3
Indoor run
Just because the weather prevents you and your dog from going outside doesn't mean your Wire Foxy Russell has to skip their run! Start at the top of your stairwell and throw a tennis ball down for your dog to chase. Have them bring the ball back up the stairs to you and then, throw it again. Your dog will love playing "indoor stair fetch" and will sleep well after running up and down so many times.

Doggy Date

Rather than leave your dog at home where they will be anxiously awaiting your return, bring your dog with you on a doggy date. Find a coffee shop or restaurant that allows dogs and enjoy a nice meal out with your best friend.

Sandbox Dig

Wire Foxy Russells love to dig so set up a small sandbox for your dog. The soft sand will feel good on their paws and since they can dig in the sand, they won't be inclined to dig in your yard!

Conclusion

When you own a very active dog, especially one who also has a very strong will, you need to find ways to keep them busy. A busy dog is a happy dog and a happy pup means a happy family. All of these activities were hand-picked for Wire Foxy Russell's specifically and they are all geared toward your dog's temperament and preferences. So pick one of these great activities and get ready to see how happy your dog can be - you will be smiling too!
