Introduction

If you’re an avid hunter or a family with grown-up children, you may have considered welcoming a Rajapalayam pooch, or Poligar Hound, into your home. Rajapalayams are loyal, loving and exceptionally protective dogs with a high prey drive and an even higher need for love. They love nothing more than to please you, but will also do everything they can to ensure their territory, your home, is well protected. In essence, they make the perfect guard dog while being a brilliant family pet at the same time. However, as a large dog, they also need a significant amount of stimulation. Here are a few of the many options that may be worth your consideration.

Activity description

As an owner of a Rajapalayam will know, this breed loves to go hunting. With a high prey drive, they become man’s best friend when out in the wilderness. Their specialty is wild boar, and they’ll stop at nothing to ensure your freezer is packed full of meat to feed your family. However, they also have short attention spans if they smell something better, so a harness may be necessary when you head into the hills. A Poligar Hound will handle all kinds of weather, variable terrain, and is more than capable of handling a 5-10 hour journey as well. All you need to take on a hunting trip is your pup, a harness, food, water, and a GPS tracker.

Step
1
Organize gear
Your pup will be chomping at the bit to get going, but spending a little time planning can save a lot of hassle further down the track. You will need to pack enough food and water for you both, a GPS tracker, so you don’t lose track of your furry friend, a harness to keep them in control, and warm clothing as well. Given the sometimes-challenging terrain, you may also benefit from taking a first aid kit, a personal locator beacon, and a mobile device as well. Write a list, check it twice; then you’re ready to hit the road.
Step
2
Research your destination
Rajapalayams love the thrill of the hunt, but if you want them to benefit from a better opportunity of doing what they do best, it’s going to be in your best interests to do your research. Not every hunting location is going to be lucrative for the type of animal you’re after, so find out where hogs are plentiful then plan to head there. The hog population is nearing being out of control in the United States, so head to states such as California, Hawaii, and Oklahoma. There is estimated to be over 430,000 hogs in most counties in Oklahoma alone. It’s also important to find out what hunting regulations are for each area.
Step
3
Go hunting
With a location circled on your map and all your gear packed, it’s time to harness up your furry friend and hit the road. Your pup is going to love being out in the fresh open air, chasing wildlife and tracking prey. However, remember to keep note of their location. Poligar Hounds, while loyal, follow a scent and are easily distracted. Therefore, you want to be able to watch them on your GPS tracker or keep their harness on for as long as possible.

Leash
Doggy waste bag
Activity description

Because Poligar Hounds are very selective with the dogs they like to interact with, you may wish to take your pooch for a long walk opposed to a trip to the dog park. While many owners can vouch for their dog’s proper socialization and behavior, given the high prey drive of this breed, you may find a solo walk is equally as beneficial for their mental and physical stimulation. On a sunny or overcast day, grab your leash, a doggy waste bag and of course, your Rajapalayam and head out. You’ll find a brisk walk is beneficial for both body and soul.

Step
1
Plan a route
Poligar Hounds love nothing more than meandering through parks and nature trails taking in the many sights and sounds. What’s more, they also like to bound around and spend a little time off-leash as well. If your Rajapalayam has excellent recall, spend some time researching local off-leash areas for dogs. Something a little off the beaten track will make it less likely to encounter other people or dogs, but it offers a vast open space for a friendly game of fetch.
Step
2
Go walking
Once you’ve established the best area to walk your pup, it’s time to get going. You will find that an hour-long walk is ample for your dog to tire themselves out, while also giving you the opportunity to work on your fitness as well. Change your pace to offer your dog variety, and remember to change the route on each trip as well. They will love the opportunity to go somewhere new and exciting, with lots of things to see, do, and experience.

Laser Toy
Activity description

For a dog with a high prey drive, you need to keep your finger on the pulse of fun things for them to experience. While a walk and a hunting expedition are sure to appeal to their physical needs, a laser game is going to tick all the boxes for mental stimulation as well. You can play this game in any weather, both indoors and outdoors, and it’s also far more exciting at night as well. Your Rajapalayam is sure to love how much fun playing with a laser is – not knowing that they’ll never “catch” it. What’s more, even after half an hour or an hour of play, they will still be none the wiser to your trickery.

Step
1
Buy a laser
Not every laser is going to be suitable for your dog to play with, so it might help to do a little research before adding one to your shopping cart. When you’re looking at various options, always go for the one with a pet-approved LED light – one that won’t damage their eyes. You may also like to stock up on additional batteries as they can go flat fairly quickly.
Step
2
Remove breakables
Your Rajapalayam is going to see that elusive laser light as prey, and they are going to be excited to get it. If you’re playing the laser game indoors, your pup is going to be like a bull in a china shop. Therefore, to avoid breaking anything, move to an area of your home where there’s nothing they can destroy, or put all valuables and obstacles away. If the weather permits, you may find playing a laser game is far better outside.
Step
3
Get playing!
Once you’ve found a safe environment for you and your furry friend to play, it’s time to burn off some energy. Once you turn that laser light on, your pup will be rearing to go – trying to get their paws on that pesky light. You can move it along the floor for them to chase, up the walls if there’s no risk of damage, or in circles to tire them out and make them dizzy. Any dog that loves the thrill of the chase will get so much pleasure out of this game, and you’ll be tired from laughter as well.

Dog Obstacle Course

Even though a Rajapalayam is a large dog, they are also exceptionally agile. And, given their high energy levels, you may like to try out a dog obstacle course. You can build one yourself using old children’s playground equipment, or you can even find a business local to you that specializes in agility and training course for dogs. Not only do you firmly establish that ever-growing bond between you and man’s best friend, but you’re giving them a thorough workout. They’re sure to come home, get into their bed and have a well-deserved nap.

Training

A high-energy dog such as a Rajapalayam requires a lot of training. However, it’s crucial to enable only one person to train your pampered pooch from beginning to end. This breed of dog tends to bond with one central person, and if you swap trainers halfway through, you may fail to see results. Therefore, let it either be you who takes control of basic commands such as sit, heel, and come, or a professional trainer. Not both.

Conclusion

A Rajapalayam, or Poligar Hound, is an Indian breed of dog predominantly used for hunting and guarding. However, given the right training, fun daily activities and plenty of love, they make loyal and loving family pets as well. Put your best paw forward and treat your pup to plenty of fun, interactive and rewarding activities they are sure to love.
