Introduction

Talk about a fun loving Terrier mix! The Welsh Toy Fox Terrier is a combination of a Welsh Terrier and a Toy Fox Terrier which means that if you own one of these pups, you are getting double trouble terrier traits. However, if you are able to keep your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier busy, they will be more inclined to behave! These activities are perfect for your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier as they are designed for this specific breed in mind. Time to have some fun with your pup!

Activity description
Welsh Toy Fox Terriers are very loyal to their owners and they also have a whole lot of terrier energy in those little bodies. When these two traits combine, you get a dog that does not like being alone and can go a little stir crazy when left inside. This can turn into destructive behavior which is something you definitely want to avoid. The best way to do this is to find out what your dog's favorite chew toy is. This fun activity will cost you a little bit of money as you will need to purchase a few different toys but it will be well worth the cost when your pup opts for their toy rather than your furniture!
Step
1
Bones
Look for a few different kinds of bones for your dog to try. There are real marrow bones, bones made of yak milk and even bones made of fish skins! Buy two or three types and place them all in front of your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier. Which one will your pup pick? Whichever they seem drawn too, buy more and keep on hand to give to your pup as a special treat anytime you need to leave the house.
Step
2
Textured chews
Many rubber toys have grooves and ridges that will feel good on your pup's teeth as they chew away. Try a few different textured chew toys and see which your Welsh Fox Terrier prefers. If your dog is young, they may even be teething, making these toys even more ideal.

Activity description
While Welsh Fox Terriers are not as prey driven as some other Terrier breeds, they do still have a fantastic sense of smell that can be used to play some fun games. Setting up an indoor "hunt" is a perfect way to spend a rainy day inside with your dog. Your Welsh Fox Terrier will be able to do some tracking, exercising their noses and their bodies as well. This activity is also very inexpensive, costing only the price of a few treats and bones! Just be prepared to play this game with your dog all the time as they will love the hunt and also the reward.
Step
1
Treat search
Have your dog sit and stay in one room and show them a handful of their favorite treats. While your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier waits patiently, go into another room and hide the treats. Return to your dog and release them from their "stay". See how long it takes for your pup's powerful nose to find their treats!
Step
2
New pet
Have a friend who owns a dog or cat rub a clean towel on their pet to get some of their pet's scent on the towel. Then bring the towel home and hide it in your house. Your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier's nose will perk up when they smell a "new pet" in the house. When they discover it is just a towel, they will likely throw it around with their mouth or make a nice nest to curl up in, claiming the towel as their own!
Step
3
Bone dig
You don't have to be outside in order to let your dog dig. Place a nice new bone in the middle of some dirty laundry or under a pile of blankets. Let your dog dig through the fabric, trying to get to their new bone prize! Once they find what they are looking for, they will probably curl up in all the blankets and clothes and chew on their new toy. Sounds cozy!

Activity description
Welsh Toy Fox Terriers are very quick and very agile which makes them prime candidates for agility courses. However, not everyone wants to enter their dog in full-fledged agility competitions. If you want a fun way to exercise and train your dog, you can simply use aspects of agility courses without all the pressure of competition. Teaching your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier to navigate obstacles can be done any time of year but is probably best when you and your dog can head outside to practice. You can choose to purchase real dog agility equipment or make the obstacles using things from your home - whichever works best for your budget!
Step
1
Tunnel run
This is one of the most simple parts of an agility course that your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier will just have pure fun doing. Running through a tunnel is easy and exciting! Put the tunnel on the ground and let your pup sniff it to become familiar. Then, place a treat at the end of the tunnel and coax your pup to run through. This curious breed won't need much convincing and will soon be running back and forth through the tunnel.
Step
2
Hurdles
Jumping over hurdles is a great way for your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier to get in a good workout without just running around in circles. Teach your pup to jump over a hurdle by blocking both sides of the hurdle and luring your pup over with treats. Once your dog has mastered one jump, set up several in a row and see how quickly your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier can zip over them all.
Step
3
Zig zag
One of the harder tricks in an agility competition is the zig zag (or weave) poles. Several poles are set up in a row, evenly spaced, and your dog has to weave from left to right through the poles. Teach your Welsh Toy Fox Terrier to do this trick by walking them through the pattern slowly, encouraging them with treats as you go. After a few trips through the pole course, your dog will get the idea and be running left to right in order to get their reward.

More Fun Ideas...

Movie Night

Welsh Toy Fox TerriersĀ do have a lot of energy but they are also quite the cuddlers. Plan a nice night in with your dog full of movies and couch cuddles.

Food Mat

This breed of dog does well with mental stimulation and challenging your dog to get their dinner is a great activity. Look for a dog food mat in your local pet store where you pour the dog food in and your pup has to use their nose to reach in and get their dinner out.

Conclusion

While Terriers as a general breed are known to be high energy and high maintenance, Welsh Toy Fox Terriers are a slight exception to that rule. Yes, they love anything that keeps them active and they will benefit from planned entertainment, however, they are also a very sweet breed of dog. So take time to teach your dog to jump over hurdles, have an indoor treat hunt or race through a tunnel but also be sure to cuddle that little pup and enjoy their happy demeanor!
