The Giant Bolonauzer is a designer breed which combines the Bolognese and the Giant Schnauzer.  They are a medium to large size dog. The Bolognese and the Giant Schnauzer shed very little and are both hypoallergenic breeds.  The coat of this hybrid may be wavy, or wiry and medium in length.  The Giant Bolonauzer is an energetic, intelligent, loyal and happy dog though definitely has a mind of his own and isn't afraid to use it.  Not for first time dog owners, this hybrid needs direction and will thrive with kind but firm handling.

Giant Bolonauzer Breed History

The Bolognese was named after Bologna, a city in Italy.  It is believed that Bologna is where the breed was first established. A prized pet in the families of the nobility, this canine is related to the Havanese, the Maltese, the Bichon Frise and the Coton de Tulear. Members of the wealthy class who owned this spritely dog included the Medici family, the Estes family and in Russia, Catherine the Great. Also known as the Bichon Bolognese, they ran into trouble after falling out of favor after the Renaissance period, almost becoming extinct. A few loyal European breeders kept the breed going and years later, descendants of the Bolognese of Bologna made their way to the United States. The Giant Schnauzer is a working breed of dog developed in the 17th century in Germany. There are three types of Schnauzers, the Miniature Schnauzer, Standard Schnauzer and the Giant Schnauzer. The breed is actually not a giant breed but is the largest of the three types of Schnauzers.  It is believed that the Giant Schnauzer was developed by breeding the Great Dane, the German Pinscher and the Bouvier des Flandres. They were bred to herd and protect livestock going into the market to be sold.  They were kept as watchdogs on farms, factories and shops. The Giant Schnauzer was also used as a military dog during World War I and World War II.

Giant Bolonauzer Breed Maintenance

The Giant Bolonauzer’s coat may be medium to long and wavy or wiry.  His coat will need to be brushed with a pin brush and in addition, carefully combed to prevent matting and tangles. If his hair is wiry he may need hair stripping every 6 months. Trimming with the scissors will be needed to keep the hair away from the eyes and if there is a beard or eyebrows, these will need trimming as well. As with all hybrids, teeth care is important. Daily brushing, or at least three times a week, is essential to prevent decay and pain. The nails of your hybrid should not be neglected - tears and breaks in the nail can lead to infection.

Giant Bolonauzer Temperament

The Giant Bolonauzer will have a combination of the Bolognese and the Giant Schnauzer temperament and personalities.  The Bolognese is a happy, sweet and friendly companion. He enjoys play and daily walks but is not a high energy dog. If properly socialized, the Bolognese enjoys making new friends with people and other dogs. The breed is not a big barker and does not have a yappy bark. The Bolognese does suffer from separation anxiety. He does not do well being left alone for extended periods of time. The Giant Schnauzer is a dominant and strong-willed breed. Early socialization with strangers and other dogs is imperative. Early obedience training is highly recommended.  The breed has the tendency to be territorial and dog aggressive. He is a loyal and loving companion to his family. The Giant Schnauzer is an energetic breed, which needs daily exercise.  A bored Giant Schnauzer can become destructive in the household. Your Giant Bolonauzer will need direction in order to thrive in his familial role; kind and well-meaning, a leadership role from his owner is what he needs.

Giant Bolonauzer Activity Requirements

The Giant Bolonauzer will enjoy long daily walks. A fenced yard is essential with this breed - an apartment setting just won't do. He is high energy and needs plenty of outdoor time where he can run off some steam. Trips to the dog park can be managed if you have been working with your Giant Bolonauzer to perfect his social skills. He may enjoy obedience trials. This activity can be just what he needs to use his intelligence, yet work on his listening skills.
