Smooth Pom Terrier Breed History

The Smooth Pom Terrier is a hybrid dog. While he is not necessary a rare hybrid breed, little information exists about his origins. In order to understand more about the Smooth Pom Terrier, we can study the parent breeds in order to understand the beginnings of the Smooth Pom Terrier. The Pomeranian finds its origins in the province of Pomerania, a far Northern country. He is thought to be related to the Spitz breed who is native to this land. At one time, the Pomeranian weighed up to thirty pounds. Breeding this Pomeranian to smaller dogs eventually contributed to the Pomeranian being the small size that he is today. The breed has traditionally been popular with royalty. The Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz brought the Pom to England, and eventually Queen Victoria owned the breed. She especially loved the breed, and it is thought that she promoted breeding the Pom with smaller dogs to achieve the size they are today. In the early 1900s, the Pomeranian made its way to America, where it became immensely popular as well. Famous Pom owners include Michelangelo, Mozart, Issac Newton, and Martin Luther. The Smooth Fox Terrier has a rich history, and he is known for winning more Best-In-Show awards at the Westminster Kennel Club than any other breed in the history of the dog show. The Smooth Fox Terrier has been a favorite of royalty as well as an entertainer. He was developed to "go to ground" (go in foxes' dens and cause them to bolt from their hiding place). It is thought that the Smooth Fox Terrier is a combination of Black and Tan Terriers with Bull Terriers, Greyhounds, and Beagles. The Smooth Fox Terrier came to the United States around 1879. The American Kennel Club recognized the Smooth Fox Terrier as its own breed in 1985.

Smooth Pom Terrier Breed Appearance

The Smooth Pom Terrier will often look much like the Pomeranian parent in having the wedge-shaped head and long snout. He will likely have longer fur which may be silky straight or somewhat wavy. He will likely be white with tan markings. Depending upon the color of the Pomeranian parent breed, the Smooth Pom Terrier may also be black and white or red and white. He is likely to have the erect ears of the Pomeranian parent. However, if he does inherit the floppy ears of the Smooth Fox Terrier parent breed, special attention will need to be made to them. The Smooth Pom Terrier is a small dog. He weighs no more than seventeen pounds at maturity. He is likely to have feathering on his legs and tails. He may also inherit the ruff that the Pomeranian has around his neck.

Smooth Pom Terrier Breed Maintenance

The Smooth Pom Terrier will need a great deal of maintenance regardless of the coat type that he inherits. He is likely to have a coat that sheds no matter which type he ends up with. He will need to be brushed daily to prevent matting and to rid his coat of excess hair. Brush his teeth two or three times a week to prevent tartar buildup and bad breath. However, if you want to prevent tooth decay, brush his teeth daily. Should he inherit the ears of the Smooth Fox Terrier parent breed, you will need to wipe them out with a damp cotton ball at least once a week. Be sure to check for redness or odor as this is a sure sign of an ear infection. Trim his nails every two weeks unless he wears them down on his own. A good rule of thumb is if you can hear his nails clicking as he walks, it is time to cut his nails.
