The Toy Fox Pinscher was recognised by the International Designer Canine Registry in 2009.  They are affectionate in nature and this makes them an excellent family companion.  They are an intelligent breed that can be trained fairly easily and sources suggest that they respond well to positive reinforcement.  This breed is thought to originate in the United States and is made up of two purebred parents: the Toy Fox Terrier and the Miniature Pinscher.  This hybrid is a small dog, growing to a maximum of 12 inches.  Sources suggest that they are energetic and playful so regular exercise is essential.  Mental stimulation is just as important as physical stimulation, as boredom often means that this breed will behave destructively.  There are several similarities between the parent breeds.  While the Toy Fox Terrier is an American breed, the Miniature Pinscher originates from Germany.  They were both bred to hunt rodents. Both breeds are known to be playful and athletic.  Owners and breeders say that the Toy Fox Pinscher, like its parent breeds, has a big personality, and it is recommended for that reason, that owners should be experienced as a Toy Fox Pinscher tends to try to take charge.  Despite this, they are people-oriented and build strong bonds with their owners, however, it is recommended that these dogs are socialized from a young age, due to the fact they are very strong willed.  Both parent breeds appear to be well-balanced dogs with strong legs.  They have short, sparse coats that are easily maintained.  They live happily in small spaces, like apartments, providing they still get their daily exercise.   They are proud dogs and like to trot, lifting their legs high.  Although they are a small breed, they parade around with their high-set ears as if they are a much larger breed and are often referred to as being fearless.

Toy Fox Pinscher Breed History

This is a fairly new breed of dog and that means that not a lot is known about this exact hybrid, but there is information on its parental breeds. As it is a hybrid, the Toy Fox Pinscher is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but it is recognized by both the International Designer Canine Registry and the Designer Breed Registry.  The Toy Fox Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2003, whereas the Miniature Pinscher was recognized several decades earlier, in 1929.  The Miniature Pinscher is from German origin, and although the breed was not well documented until the 19th century, that particular breed is thought to date back around 2000 years. It was used for ratting and has excellent hunting abilities.  The Toy Fox Terrier originates in the United States, and it was originally developed to deal with a rodent issue.  Again, this canine was used for trailing and hunting, similarly to the Miniature Pinscher.  Ancestors of the Toy Fox Pinscher include the Manchester Terrier, Chihuahua, German Pinscher, Italian Greyhound and Dachshund.  As both parent breeds are recognized as a Toy Group breed by American Kennel Club, the Toy Fox Pinscher, as indicated in its name, also falls into this category of dog.  It is important not to underestimate the Toy Fox Pinscher based on its size, as this dog would give sporting breeds a run for their money also, due to its renowned hunting abilities, inherited from both parental breeds.

Toy Fox Pinscher Breed Appearance

The Toy Fox Pinscher is a small dog that falls into the toy group category.  This well-balanced, yet sturdy, poised, dog has an athletic appearance that shows its defined, muscular rear legs.  Its short, fine hair is smooth and shiny when maintained correctly. Maintenance is straight forward with this breed, as grooming is only required once per week to remove any dead hair.  All characteristics with this breed are in proportion, as the skull is slightly rounded but the muzzle is strong and tapered, ending in a scissor bite.  The tail is usually set high, and both breeds often have their tails docked or cropped from a young age, so that it is in proportion with the rest of the dog.  Both breeds have medium sized ears, that stand high on the head. As a hybrid, the Toy Fox Pinscher can inherit different characteristics from each parent breed, however as the parent breeds are similar, it does make it much easier to narrow down how this breed will look, but there are variety of color variations for this breed, including black, brown, red, brindle, sable, cream, Isabella, fawn, blue and brindle.  The eyes, however, will be brown and the nose will likely be black, or possibly brown.  Its paws are small and rounded, making it easy for this agile breed that craves exercise to do so, whilst expressing its confidence through its prominent dark-brown eyes, holding its inquisitive, yet intelligent expression.  A healthy dog is often happy, and this will reflect in this breed's behavior.

Toy Fox Pinscher Breed Maintenance

The Toy Fox Pinscher can be maintained easily and requires brushing just once per week to remove any dead hair from the coat.  A healthy dog has a shiny coat, and this can be maintained by ensuring the coat is cleaned by wiping, before brushing.  Brushing can be with a pin brush, a slicker brush or a comb, but shedding is moderate with this breed.  It is not recommended that you regularly shampoo this breed’s coat, due to it being sparse and thin. The thin coat means that this dog does not do well in cold climates, but it also does not like climates that are too hot either. Their nails should be clipped regularly to keep their small paws in a healthy condition.  The Toy Fox Pinscher should have its teeth regularly brushed as both parent breeds are known to have dental problems if their teeth are not cared for appropriately.  Denta-bones can be used to minimize the build up of tartar.  1 cup of dry food, split into two meals each day is suggested for this breed, but due to a range of allergies that could be inherited by the Toy Fox Terrier parent breed, it is suggested that high quality food is provided.  This kind of dog will suit an apartment building providing they are still well exercised to burn off those energy levels.

Toy Fox Pinscher Temperament

The Toy Fox Pinscher, although a small dog, is known to have a very big personality.  It can try to take charge so it is best to train from an early age.  Socialization is important, as this breed could try to be the boss of other breeds.  Although sources suggest that this breed makes a good family pet that loves children, both parental breeds are said to be better with older children, rather than younger.  With this in mind, it is recommended that any time spent with children and other dogs is supervised, especially at an early age.  It is sensible to supervise toy breeds anyway, as they can be injured easily due to them being small in size.  Like both parent breeds, the Toy Fox Pinscher is also said to be energetic, playful, and fearless. It makes a protective dog that will bark if it senses a threat or danger. Despite having ‘tough terrier’ instincts, this breed is also said to be affectionate and loving, so playful, loving, bonding time is essential to stimulate the hybrid both mentally and physically.  Boredom for this breed can result in destructive and poor behaviour so moderate exercise is just as important as mental and physical stimulation.

Toy Fox Pinscher Activity Requirements

Both parent breeds, the Miniature Pinscher and the Toy Fox Terrier, are energetic and require moderate exercise of around 30 minutes each day. Both are known to have high energy levels and enjoy being both physically and mentally stimulated.  The Toy Fox Pinscher will be happy with a warm climate, as neither a climate that is too hot or too cold will suit this hybridd, so measures should be taken to protect your dog against both. Because he is small in size he can do well in an apartment as long as plenty of outings are offered. If he has a yard in which to play, be sure to supervise him as he may put his digging skills to work and have success in making an unplanned escape.
