The Toy Fo-Chon is a hybrid designer dog. He is a mix between the Bichon Frise and the Toy Fox Terrier. Both the Bichon Frise and the Toy Fox Terrier are renowned for being ideal pets. This wonderful characteristic is one of many that they bestow onto the Toy Fo-Chon. The Toy Fox Terrier has a reputation for being unfriendly with small children but the Bichon Frise adores youngsters of all ages. The Toy Fo-Chon usually takes after the Bichon and loves little ones but some have been known not to get along with young children. Potential owners should take this into consideration when deciding on whether to adopt this hybrid. The Toy Fo-Chon usually stands 8 to 12 inches and weighs 7 to 12 pounds.

Toy Fo-Chon Breed History

The Toy Fo-Chon features the characteristics of both of its parent breeds. The Toy Fox Terrier is a true American. The spunky and active little dog was developed in the United States during the 1900s  by breeding several toy breeds such as the Manchester Terrier and the Chihuahua. This clever dog’s quick wit and spunky nature made it a favorite breed for circus trainers because the tiny dogs enjoyed doing tricks. The Toy Fox Terrier is highly intelligent and has become a favorite dog to compete in obedience, flyball, and agility. He always gives everything he has to make his owner happy. The Toy Fox Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2003 and entered into the Toy Group.  The Bichon Frise has a long Mediterranean history. Believed to be descended from the Barbet, the Poodle, and the Maltese, they were popular companion dogs for Spanish sailors. In the 1300s, these attractive and friendly dogs were noticed by the nobility in Italy and quickly become popular pets throughout the region. During the 1400s, the breed's popularity spread into France. His popularity would continue until the 1800s when he became a simple street dog throughout France. His cunning and intelligence allowed him to survive through hard times. After World War I, the breed again started to become popular in France. Many American soldiers brought the small white dogs back to the United States after the war. In 1972, the Bichon Frise was recognized by the American Kennel Club and entered into the Miscellaneous Group.

Toy Fo-Chon Breed Maintenance

The coat of the Toy Fo-Chon is short and usually bi-colored. He benefits from occasional brushing with the pin brush and a once a month bath. He does not require professional grooming and his fur is virtually care-free, unlike the Bichon Frise. Many owners wipe out the dog’s ears weekly to remove any debris or excess moisture. His toenails should be clipped once a month if they do not naturally wear down during walks and other activities. Owners often brush their dog’s teeth several times a week in order to improve his breath, keep his teeth white, and prevent gum disease or tooth decay.

Toy Fo-Chon Temperament

The Toy Fo-Chon is highly intelligent and easy to train. Owners usually adore teaching their hybrid tricks because of their quick wit and sheer eagerness to learn. Unlike many small breeds, the Toy Fo-Chon is very easy to housebreak as a puppy. This loving canine bonds very closely with his owner and can become protective, especially against strangers. He is not overly yappy, but he will bark when necessary. He is always up for a bit of playtime but he also enjoys just snuggling on his owner’s lap for quiet time. He must be socialized around young children who may not know when this feisty hybrid has had enough play time.

Toy Fo-Chon Activity Requirements

This little dog likes to make his owners happy. He is a true champion when it comes to learning obedience and ability. His intelligence makes him always ready to fulfil his owner’s wishes. Being a moderately active hybrid, this little guy is happiest when he is busily doing something fun. He can easily adapt to living in an apartment but should have daily walks and lots of play time. Although he likes to frequently be on the go, he will also relax and curl up in his owner’s lap while being petted and pampered. He will occasionally bark if he encounters a stranger or hears a noise that he does not recognize.
