Mini Fox Terrier

This particular designer dog breed is made by crossbreeding two types of Terrier; the Boston Terrier and the Mini Fox Terrier. Both of these breeds are small and sweet, with curious personalities and high activity levels. These dogs get along well with people of all ages and need lots of exercise. However, they are quite good at entertaining themselves, which means that they should fit in well to any household. Although these dogs are small and easy to handle, it is important to show them that you are the boss and that you should be respected and obeyed. Do not let these dogs boss you around, or they might start to think that they are the leader of the pack!

Mini Foxton Breed History

Dogs who are made from a mix between two purebred breeds are called hybrid or designer dogs. These new dog types have become a trend and can be found all around the world. Despite the popularity of designer dogs, not much is documented on the creation of most breeds. Therefore, we must consider the characteristics of the parents in order to determine many traits of the hybrid dogs. The Mini Foxton was created from a Boston Terrier and a Mini Fox Terrier. Boston Terriers are dogs who have been gradually bred down in size from various bull and terrier types who were used in pit-fighting. The first of the breed was a mix between the English Bulldog and the English White Terrier, which is now an extinct breed, and originated from Boston Massachusetts, hence the name. Interbreeding began among the wealthy employers of coachmen around the year 1865. A dog named Hooper’s Judge was created from an English White Terrier and an English Bulldog, and he was an important part of the foundation of the breed. He was bred with smaller females, which gradually brought down the breed’s average size. Mini Fox Terriers came from Australia in the 1800s, although their descendants were Fox Terrier types that originated from England. The early settlers are the ones who brought these dogs to Australia, where the little Smooth Fox Terriers were bred with Manchester Terriers. The offspring of this combination were eventually crossed with Whippets, English Toy Terriers and Italian Greyhounds. The goal was to create a smaller version of the Fox Terrier, all the while keeping the characteristics that made them so skilled at hunting. They eventually perfected a small dog that would be used to hunt smaller prey, like rodents and rabbits.

Mini Foxton Breed Appearance

Since the Mini Foxton has a Boston Terrier and a Mini Fox Terrier as parents, they will look like a cross between two. Boston Terriers are muscular and compact dogs with short bodies and an overall square look. Their heads, which are also square, are proportional and flat on top. The muzzle can be described as the same sort of shape, and is wide, deep and short. They have a well defined stop with a bite that is either even or a bit undershot. Their large eyes are wide set and round, and usually a dark color. Ears can be cropped or natural, and stand small and erect. These dogs have limbs which are strong and straight but stand wide apart to fit with the broad chests. The Boston Terrier has a slightly arched neck and short tails that are low set and either straight or slightly screwed in shape. Miniature Fox Terriers have sweet faces and agile bodies. They can often be distinguished by their oval-shaped feet. These dogs have tails that are either docked or undocked, and in some cases, dogs are born with natural bobtails.

Mini Foxton Breed Maintenance

Mini Foxtons will have similar grooming needs to those of the parents. Both Boston Terriers and Mini Fox Terriers have short and smooth fur that is easy to maintain and will only require occasional grooming and infrequent baths. If your Mini Foxton inherits large and round eyes from the Boston Terrier, they will need to be wiped daily with a damp cloth. All dogs need to have their teeth brushed often to prevent gum and tooth disease, as well as keep the breath smelling fresh. Although every day is best, tooth brushing can be done two or three times a week minimum. Your dog will need to have their nails trimmed about once or twice a month, although the exact frequency will depend on the individual dog and how active they are. Dogs can get ear infections, which is why it is wise to wipe their ears clean about once a week.

Mini Foxton Temperament

The temperament of these dogs will also be a mixture of the Boston Terrier and the Mini Fox Terrier. Boston Terriers are gentle dogs that are well-mannered and sensitive to different tones of voice. Because of this sensitivity and their high intelligence levels, they shouldn’t be too hard to train. However, do not let these dogs be the boss. It should be clearly evident that you are the leader and that they should obey you, not the other way around. The Boston Terrier is good around other pets and when brought up well, they get along with other dogs too. These dogs are known to be excellent around all types of people, including the elderly, children and strangers. The other parent of the Mini Foxton is loyal, curious and brave. Despite their cute, small size, they can become fearless and protective watch dogs if they sense any form of danger. They get along with kids as long as the children know how to treat them, and are usually well behaved around other pets as well. However, they were hunters for small prey and should not be left alone with pet rodents or reptiles, otherwise their instincts may kick in.

Mini Foxton Activity Requirements

Smart dogs like the Boston Terrier and the Mini Fox Terrier are bound to create intelligent offspring. Dogs with high intelligence levels will need to be exercised mentally as well as physically, which can be done by playing games that require thought for the dog. These small dogs are also physically energetic and should be walked and played with daily, for at least 30 to 45 minutes per day.
