Dog Names Ending in 'hi' in Pop Culture
You may remember the television sitcom from the 1970s called Happy Days. There were two characters on the show who went on to have their own show called Joanie Loves Chachi in the 1980s. No, that is not what this is about, but it does give you the background about this amazing stray American Pit Bull Terrier named Joanie, who saved the life of another stray dog, a longhaired Chihuahua named, yep you got it… Chachi.
This story is more about Chachi than Joanie, although Joanie was the one who was credited as being the hero. In 2014, Joanie, a beautiful white Pit Bull was seen carrying this tiny Chihuahua around in her mouth all over Savannah Georgia. Some people thought the larger pooch must have hurt the little one and that she was taking him home to eat. Some residents of the town called the Savannah Chatham Metro Animal Control Shelter, so they could help save the little Chihuahua.
However, when the animal control officers finally got to the pair of pooches, they noticed that Joanie was actually putting Chachi down often to clean his infected eye and give him some encouraging licks and snuggles. Joanie and Chachi were brought to the local animal hospital where Chachi underwent surgery to try to save his badly injured and infected eye. Unfortunately, they could not save his eye, but they cleaned it and stitched it up, so he could recover faster.
When Joanie and Chachi were reunited a few days later, the two were very emotional, whining, licking, and cuddling with each other. But now, at the shelter together, they needed a new home, preferably together. Nobody wanted to see the two split up as they would be devastatingly heartbroken. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to find a home for two dogs together, especially when one is a Pit Bull and one is permanently disabled.
However, due to the devotion of one of the volunteer workers at the Savannah Chatham Metro Animal Control Shelter, Christina Sutherin, found them a new forever home – together. In fact, Sutherin was given a Civilian of the Year award for her work with shelter animals in part by being so devoted to finding homes for all the animals at the shelter, but especially for this sad story with a happy ending. Joanie and Chachi were relocated to Florida, where their new owners took them in, and they have been happily living together ever since.
