Introduction
The Komondor, affectionately called Komie or Kom, is a distinctive dog with their long white corded coat. This Hungarian livestock guardian dog is powerful, agile, and surprisingly light-footed. The Komondor is protective and independent in nature; they do require an experienced handler to keep them from taking over the top spot in the household. First time dog owners or soft handlers should not consider a Komie for their home. The Komondor will sit and watch you all day long to make sure that you are kept safe and no harm is coming close. Their protective nature and intense suspicion of strangers can cause problems for you if they perceive someone as a threat. Without proper training and a conscientious handler, they will attack animals and people they see as threatening. The Kom can be extremely aggressive toward other dogs and may not be able to share their home with other dogs.
Komondor Dog Names In Pop Culture
While the Komondor is an easily recognizable breed, they are not very popular among general pet owners. These dogs do require a specific home and person to be the alpha over them. Dahu is no exception and is a typical Komondor. His handler, Anna Quigley, understands the Komondor personality and keeps Dahu under tight control when walking through the crowd on their way to the ring. Quigley is a professional handler and has been working with Dahu for a while. When he earned a spot at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club’s Dog Show in February of 1993, Quigley was very proud of him and claimed all the hard work was worth it. Dahu made history when he won first place in the working group and secured his spot in the Best in Show competition. Dahu, or Champion Lajosmegyi Dahu Digal, was the first Komondor to win the working group at Westminster. Dahu beat 18 other champions in the working group. At the breed level, Dahu beat a seven time Best in Show winner; Dahu only holds one Best in Show win and 15 working group wins during his four years of competing.
Judge Mrs. Edd Bivin from Fort Worth, Texas, chose Dahu in the group ring. She first pulled him out of the line up for her short list and then moved him into the third position. Finally, she gave Dahu another close look and moved him into first place. As Bivin looked over her selection one more time Quigley and Dahu worked together to show off his best assets. Ultimately, Bivin gave Dahu the win and helped write him into the history books.
At six years old, Dahu was nearing the end of his show career and getting ready to retire with his owner Patricia Turner of Chehalis, Washington. Quigley co-owns Dahu. Both Quigley and Turner were excited that Dahu has entered the history books with his win at Westminster. With this win, he brought attention to the breed and helped boost their notoriety.
Dahu had some intense competition in the Best in Show ring at Westminster, going against the crowd favorites: a Dandie Dinmont, Bichon Frise, and German Shepherd Dog. The German Shepherd Dog named Mystique was the number one dog in the country and was being handled by legendary James Moses. A rather personable Fox Terrier named Lacey was also another favorite having won it all the previous year. Mystique was the heavy crowd favorite, but Dahu did not seem concerned when he strutted out into the spotlight. Unfortunately, Dahu could not best Butler, the Dandie Dinmont.
Komondor Dog Name Considerations
The Komondor is a strong Hungarian breed that is independent in nature and must have an experienced handler to help them become well-adjusted companions. While the Komondor is gaining notoriety within the United States, any responsible breeder will be careful when choosing homes for their puppies. Expect to spend a lot of time training and socializing your Komondor puppy. Naming them will not be as difficult as adjusting to having such an independent and watchful nature. You may want to begin your search by going through names with strong Hungarian influence. Some names from Hungary can be a little difficult to pronounce or even spell, but you can probably make a safe bet that no other dog in the neighborhood would have the same name. Take some time to get to know your new Komie’s personality before settling on a name. Most times, your new puppy will help you find the right name for them. You may want to consider Andor for your male puppy; it means brave and manly. Gergo means watchful and alert, the very epitome of a Komondor’s personality. If you are looking for a name that describes their white coloring, there is always Bela for a male or Finian for a female.
